Interview with James Unsworth

 q) Let’s start with the basics; what’s your full name, where do you live, and how old are you?

a)My name is James Unsworth I live in the middle of London and I just turned 28.

q) Do you have any formal training?

a)I studied Printmaking at Winchester School of Art and at the Royal College of Art

q) Did the place you grew up in influence your image making?

a)Definitely the people I grew up with and the atmosphere of the place but not necessarily the place itself. I grew up in Liverpool and as a teenager smoked lots of weed.
I love the place but not enough to live there again.

q) How do you come up with your concepts?

a)I tend to use other compositions as a frame for me to create my own narratives.
I use compositions taken from medieval paintings and popular print.

q) Describe your creations in a clear, concise and understandable sentence. What do you call them?

a)I draw a lot and I make prints.

q) What other mediums would you like to explore in your image making?

a)Part of me wants to do everything but another part of me believes I should stick with one thing and master it.

q) What is the best time in the day for you to work on a project? Is there one, or is it more about the environment — maybe the right mood?

a)I am easily distracted so I work best at night when everyone else has left the studio and gone to bed.

q) What are your artistic influences?…and generally who or what influences you the most?

a)My influences range from complete trash to high art.
Francoise Rabelais

q) Who are some of your favourite artists/designers/photographers?

a)I’m interested other artists who use print or understandable narrative like William Hogarth, James Ensor, Albrecht Durer, James Gillray, Robert Crumb, Hieronymous Bosch, Pieter Breughel, Chris Hipkiss, Paul Noble, Gregory Jacobsen, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Charles Burns, Henry Darger, Adam Latham and Richard Galloway. But I think my favourite artist is Olaf Breuning who is a photographer and filmmaker.
I used to want to be David Shrigley.

q) What is your next project?Exhibition?Collaboration?

a)I have a show opening on October 9th 2007, its called ‘The Future Can Wait’
thefuturecanwait.com

q) What are your plans for the future?

a)I’ll be happy if I can continue drawing and doing what I enjoy.

q) Are there some web sites that you would like to recommend? Artists, art communities, xxx,…!?

a)I don’t use the internet that much I prefer going to Galleries and Museums. I recommend the Drawing and Print study room at the British Museum.
It is one of my favourite places to go, the drawing collection at the Louvre is also amazing, I held original Bosch drawings in my hands.

q) What sort of music do you listen to?

a)I listen to a wide variety of music and see loads of live performance so plenty of bands that you’ll never hear of. I’m in a show with Daniel Johnston in November 2007 and I like his music a lot.

q) Do you collect anything? If so what?

a)I’ve been collecting comics since I was 12,

q) What do you do for fun?

a)I read Science Fiction and I also spend a lot of time in nightclubs.

q) Any advice you can pass onto aspiring artists/designers?

a)If you want it enough you’ll get it.

q) Your contacts.
